Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present evidence showing that the methods used in many institutions including The Babies Hospital (New York City) for screening for infection in infants born of mothers with premature rupture of maternal membranes are inefficient and potentially misleading. The screening procedure under discussion consists of cultures of cord blood (CB) , gastric aspirate (GA), and infant blood (IB) of any infant born 24 hours or more after rupture of the membranes. In actual practice, however, in many instances the IB culture has not been taken unless the infant became clinically symptomatic or the other cultures were reported as positive. Keywords
