Abstract
To the Editor: Caper's editorial in the June 9 issue* cited inaccurate data, which he used to criticize the physicians of La Jolla, California, for overusing coronary-artery bypass surgery. The extent of damage from the editorial is indeterminable, but it has already been cited in the San Diego newspapers and in a reply from a private foundation to a grant request.Dr. Caper, the president of the Codman Research Group, used data from a California data commission that showed that residents of La Jolla had a threefold greater frequency of coronary bypass surgery than residents of Palo Alto.
