Abstract
The relationship between gender and genocide remains ambivalent. A preliminary analysis of in-depth interviews with 14 Armenian female survivors reveals a gender distinction in the 1915 Turkish genocide of the Armenians. The genocidal process was gender-based. Men were instantaneously killed and women and children were deported. However, members of both sexes acted as perpetrators and collaborators. Few men and women acted as rescuers. Keywords
