An Infant with Chronic, Relapsing Polyneuropathy Responsive to Steroids

Abstract
SUMMARY A seven‐week‐old infant presented with an acute flaccid paraparesis. Her subsequent course was punctuated by numerous exacerbations, in association with minor intercurrent illness and remissions produced by corticosteroid treatment. Postmortem examination revealed a chronic inflammatory polyradiculopathy. She represents the youngest patient yet described with a chronic, relapsing, steroid‐responsive polyneuropathy. RÉSUMÉ Polyneuropathie infantile chronique à rechute répondant au traitement stéroïde Un nourrisson de sept semaines présenta une paraparésie flasque aigue. Son évolution ultérieure fut marquée par de nombreaux paroxysmes associés à différentes affections intercurrentes mineures et des rémissions provoquées par le traitement corticostéroïde. L'examen post‐mortem montra une polyradiculopathie chronique inflammatoire. Ce nourrisson de sexe féminin représente le cas le plus jeune décrit jusqu'à ce jour de polyneuropathie chronique répondant au traitement stéroïde. Der weitere Verlauf war geprägt durch zahlreiche Exacerbationen im Zusammenhang mit leichten interkurrenten Erkrankungen und durch Remissionen nach Corticosteroid behandlung. Die Sektion ergab eine chronische entzüdliche Polyradiculopathie. Dies ist die jüngste Patientin, die bisher mit einer chronischen remittierenden, auf Steroide ansprechenden Polyneuropathie beschrieben wurde. Su curso posterior se caracterizó por nombrosas exacerbaciones asociadas con enfermedades menores intercurrentes y por remisiones producidas por el tratamiento con corticosteroides. El examen postmortem mostró una radiculopatia inflamatoria crónica. Constituye el paciente más joven afecto de polineuropatia crónica a recaidas sensible a los esteroides hasta ahora descrito.
