Abstract
Simple algebraic formulas have been developed for the third-order aberrations of a single-element lens having a radial refractive-index gradient, plane faces, and object plane at infinity. Such formulas have some advantages over previous methods of analysis that require ray tracing and that are well suited to multielement lens systems. The derivation technique adopted in the present paper can be extended to deal with a finite object distance, but the formulas are somewhat more complicated. Keywords
