Education or Promotion?

Abstract
Recent guidelines1 2 3 4 make it clear that the pharmaceutical industry will remain heavily involved in medical education and continuing medical education. We physician-educators are losing the battle for the hearts and minds of our house staff, whose stomachs are already full of pizza from pharmaceutical companies. Faculty resistance diminishes as one by one we join the speaker circuits delivering messages acceptable to industry — messages perhaps slightly bent by repetition and generous honorariums. We believe we are still in control. We stand idly by as industry salespersons keep in ever increasing contact with our house staff and students.
