Abstract
The Department of Psychiatry of Georgetown University School of Medicine has conducted a postgraduate program for physicians in the area of Washington, DC, for four years. Forty-eight nonpsychiatrist practitioners have participated in one or more 12-week series of seminars designed to improve their ability to treat patients with emotional disorders. Problems were encountered in recruitment, program development, and faculty participation. The seminars assisted participants in modifying attitudes about emotionally disturbed patients and increased their knowledge and skills in dealing with them. All of the physicians who participated for three or more years demonstrated improved attitudes and broadened the scope or style of their practices in the management of emotional problems. Keywords
