Disturbances of swallowing and esophageal motility in patients with multiple sclerosis

Abstract
In a group of 29 patients with multiple sclerosis, 16 had experienced difficulty in swallowing. Four had difficulty in the earliest phases of swallowing. Choking, not caused by palatal weakness, was reported by 10 patients. Twelve patients described "sticking" of the bolus during the late phase of swallowing. Twenty-six patients underwent studies of esophageal motility. Such abnormalities as poor relaxation of the pharyngoesophageal or gas-troesophageal sphincter, simultaneous deglutition waves, incoordination of the swallowing complexes, and diffuse spasm of the esophagus were noted in 15 of the 26 patients.
