Attitude change as a function of latitudes of acceptance and rejection.

Abstract
72 undergraduates, exhibiting identical attitude scales toward the Vietnam war, constructed essays at 1 of 6 positions discrepant from their most acceptable position. Resultant attitude shifts were consistent with assimilation-contrast theory, with attitude defined as the total latitude of acceptance. Greatest shifts occurred toward communications 2 and 3 positions removed from the end point of the latitude of acceptance. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
