Abstract
Coil-shaped coaxial carbon nanotubules are imaged along the coil-axis direction. It has been demonstrated that one pitch of the coil contains 12 straight segments with a joint angle of 30° between each. Each straight segment is composed of coaxial graphitic multilayer tubules with turbostratic stackings between neighboring layers as confirmed by electron diffraction (ED). These experimental results strongly support the models for tubule joints in the presence of pentagon-heptagon pairs. The comparison of ED patterns obtained from adjacent straight segments allows us to study in detail the joint between neighboring tubules. Primary evidence for a toroidal form of a carbon cage is also presented. Keywords
