Abstract
Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the nonlinear formulation of the truss design problem is superior to the linear formulation. In design of typical transmission towers a very large number of members must be selected subject to the action of a number of load conditions. In the linear formulation a very large problem results. Running times are large. In addition, numerical difficulties were encountered in seeking the solution to the linear program using the usual methods. The nonlinear method produced more efficient solutions and, in addition, included at least an elementary treatment of buckling. This method has been used in the design of large truss structures. Keywords
