Abstract
NOTHING so captivates the medical mind as the prevention of catastrophe by a simple method. Thus may be explained the rapidly increasing popularity of proximal ligation of thrombosed veins for the prevention of pulmonary embolism. Indeed, there must be few surgeons, who have not witnessed the shockingly sudden transition of a happy convalescent into a patient rapidly dying from this totally unexpected disaster. Nor is the picture of so-called "thromboembolism"1 infrequent.
