Some Phases of European Corn Borer Control in Central Maine

Abstract
Winter survival where temp. of -24[degree]F was recorded a-mounted to 96% of the hibernating larvae. The single generation strain predominates in this locality. Summer survival of eggs was 64% and of larvae about 26%. Farm practices alone do not control the borer. In insecticide tests DDT and Ryania were found most satisfactory. Ryania is used where the plant residue is used for feeding livestock, DDT where there is no residue problem. Insecticides used over a period of 4 yrs. gave a 77.8% control. No trace of DDT residues was found in corn which had been treated with 4 applications of DDT dust during 1948. The use of moth emergence in timing the applications of insecticides is discussed. Cumulative percentage curves of emergence, oviposition, and borer hatching are shown.
