Problems of forested regions in Arkhangel'sk Oblast

Abstract
Two geographers with many years of field experience in the forested regions of Arkhangel'sk Oblast examine the ecological‐geographical problems of this major part of Russia. Landscapes of the northern and middle taiga, which recently have been subjected to active logging, occur widely here. The characteristics of timber cutting and its negative ecological and social consequences are outlined. The specific geographical characteristics of industrial pollution, to a great extent associated with forest‐industry activity, are analyzed. The importance of forecasting the condition of forest resources in the oblast over the next 10–20 years is noted.
