A Gastric Mucigogue Action of the Alkyl Sulfates

Abstract
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium "Lorol" sulfate (SLS) were each introduced into fistulized isolated stomachs of dogs. The gastric secretion was then drained and analyzed for mucin. The gastric contents contained considerable chloride and mucin. The chloride appeared to come chiefly from blood by diffusion. The vol. of gastric contents decreased slightly indicating water absorption. After the alkyl sulfate was withdrawn mucus secretion continued high for several hrs. This secretion was a local one and was not influenced by atro-pine. SDS produced the most normal and pure mucus.
