The Determination of Estrogen and Progesterone Metabolites in Urine in Pregnancy by Gas Chromatography

Abstract
A clinically useful gas chromatographic method for the determination of urinary estrogen and progesterone metabolites has been presented. The results obtained on a series of 50 specimens from normal and abnormal subjects are given. In certain instances, it is necessary to know the levels of pregnanolone as well as of estriol for complete evaluation of placental function and the status of the fetus. After 35 weeks'' gestation, less than 20 mg of estriol triacetate or 5 mg of pregnanolone acetate per 24 hr. indicate fetal distress.
