Flocculation in a fission yeast: an initial step in the conjugation process

Abstract
Schizosaccharomyces pombe NCYC 132, a haploid strain not previously observed to conjugate and sporulate, formed floes during stationary phase when grown aerobically in malt extract broth. Flocculation was followed by sexual conjugation and sporulation. Cultural conditions which prevented the induction of flocculation, such as anaerobiosis or growth in minimal salts medium, also prevented conjugation and sporulation.
