Further Evidence for Agaricus brunnescens Peck as the Preferred Name for the Cultivated Agaricus

Abstract
Three arguments are presented to defend the use of the name Agaricus brunnescens, instead of A. bisporus for the cultivated Agaricus: 1) The names A. brunnescens (described in 1900) and A. bisporus (described in 1926) were originally applied to the same species; 2) a fresh collection recently made in Toronto, Ontario [Canada], is conspecific with A. brunnescens; 3) the Toronto collection is genetically and taxonomically inseparable from the cultivated Agaricus. Arguments are supported by evidence from the literature, examination of authentic herbarium material and by nuclear and mitochondrial DNA restriction fragment analyses.
