Abstract
5-HT (serotonin) uptake by platelets from patients with asthma was studied. In patients with symptomatic endogenous asthma, 5-HT uptake by platelets was severely impaired, and slightly disturbed in platelets from patients with asymptomatic exogenous asthma. Serum and whole blood from asthmatic patients contained higher amounts of 5-HT than that of normal subjects and elevated levels of 5-HT-metabolites such as kynurenine were demonstrated in such patients. Tryptophan load on asthmatics leads to abnormally high urinary excretion of xanthurenic acid. Since tryptophan is the main precursor in 5-HT synthesis, a reduced tryptophan intake might be of importance. Keywords
