Increase in Tracheal Glycoprotein Synthesis with Estrogen Administration

Abstract
Experiments were performed to examine the effect of estrogen administration on D-[1-14C]glucosamine uptake by rat trachea. Ovariectomized 125 g rats were given 25 .mu.g of 17.beta.-estradiol daily for 8 days and sacrificed on the 9th day. Treated animals had a 20% increase/3 h in uptake of radioactivity into acid-insoluble material of trachea. There was no change in aminosugar pool sizes. Estrogen can cause changes in rat tracheal epithelium consistent with increased glycoprotein synthesis.
