Abstract
Moseley M.J. (1973) The impact of growth centres in rural regions—II. An analysis of spatial “flows” in East Anglia, Reg. Studies 7, 77–94. An attempt is made to consider in the geographical dimension the various channels by which the expansion of a “growth centre” will affect the region within which it is located. A distinction is drawn between “direct”, “indirect” and “induced” effects. With reference to two small expanded towns in East Anglia, Haverhill and Thetford, various questions are considered, which relate to migration, commuting, industrial linkage and personal expenditure. While the recruitment of labour has benefited residents of many villages and small towns around the growth centres, the generation of supplementary economic activity has largely occurred in the growth centres themselves, in the larger regional centres or outside the region altogether. Thus, further doubts are cast on the efficacy of the “trickle down” development processes.
