Heteronuclear diatomic scattering from solid surfaces: A hard-cube model

Abstract
A classical mechanical hard‐cube model for the scattering of heteronuclear diatomic gas beams from well‐defined solid surfaces is presented. The diatomic gas molecule is approximated by an ellipse. The geometric center of the ellipse differs from the center of mass of the gas molecule. The gas–surface interaction is impulsive, and the mechanics are developed with the classical conservation equations of energy, momentum, and angular momentum. Scattering patterns are computed numerically after an examination of the collision process. The influence of the physical parameters of the scattering process upon the shapes of scattering patterns is discussed.
