Studies on the genus Shigella

Abstract
Exptl. evidence indicates that at least 23 strains of the Shigella group possess individual type-specific polysaccharide antigens. Some of them also possess factors in common. A Table of Classification based on such antigenic behavior is presented. The formamide method of extraction was used in all cases. Mutations are apt to occur in old cultures of Shigella organisms and therefore complicate their antigenic behavior in identification studies. Newly isolated strains are much to be preferred when available. A table showing many of the mutational changes in behavior has been worked out but is far less satisfactory for general use than is the table based on the reactions of fresh strains.
