Inhibition of Growth of Uninfected and Rous Sarcoma Virus-Infected Chick-Embryo Fibroblasts by Rifampicin2

Abstract
Rifampicin concentrations greater than 20 μg/ml inhibited the growth of chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF) and CEF transformed by Rous sarcoma virus (RSV). These effects increased with increasing drug concentration and with increasing time of exposure of cells to the drug. These results suggest that the inhibition by rifampicin of focus formation by RSV-infected CEF results from inhibition of cell proliferation rather than from a specific effect on viral transformation. Rifampicin also inhibited infectious virus production by RSV-infected CEF.
