Abstract

THROMBOSIS of the dorsal vein of the penis is an uncommon clinical entity. The available literature on the subject is limited. Helm and Hodge, ¹ in 1958, reported such a patient, but were unable to determine the cause. Harrow and Sloane² described nine instances of thrombophlebitis of the penis. Trauma was the important causative factor. Sexual intercourse preceded the thrombophlebitis in three patients. One instance of thrombophlebitis occurred after direct injury by a golf ball. In two patients, the lesion developed spontaneously without apparent cause. Aubertin, Roy, and Fenelon, ³ in 1960, described a case of thrombosis of the corpus cavernosum in a patient with gout. The following case report is of interest because the thrombophlebitic process was at first thought to be idiopathic, but subsequently has proved to be a manifestation of a systemic disorder—thromboangiitis obliterans.
