Abstract
A case is reported of serum sickness in a 42 year old woman who had received horse diphtheria antitoxin. Studies showed a marked transient peripheral plasmacytosis coincident with the development of precipitating antibodies against equine serum fractions. Immunoelectrophoresis showed that the antibody was complex and had been elicited by at least six distinct antigens of the horse serum. The diagnostic importance of a peripheral plasmacytosis in serum sickness is re-emphasized and its relation to the development of circulating antibody is briefly discussed. Keywords
