Abstract
The research methodology developed in this article borrows heavily from process analysis and behaviouristic theories of the firm, and concentrates on the individual production and decision-making unit. The methodology is composed of two major parts: the first, a system for classifying the products, processes, and the technical and legal linkages between industrial plants according to the growth pole framework; and the second, a behaviouristic model of the linkage development of the firm within the growth pole. The first classification system for the growth pole draws on the techniques developed by Luttrell and Tosco in their research projects connected with the Mezzogiorno and North-west England. The second model postulates alternative linkage development paths which the firm may take both in terms of location and production—process structure over time.
