Abstract
The normal modes and frequencies of planar ZXY2 molecules are investigated using the most general potential function consistent with the symmetry. The equilibrium configuration has the symmetry of the group C2v and consequently the frequencies are all non‐degenerate. By developing a set of generalized coordinates having the same symmetry properties as the normal coordinates, the secular determinant is factored directly into one third‐order determinant, one linear factor, and one second‐order determinant. Keywords
