Abstract
Some foresters assume omniscience through habit, others accept the attribute upon request. The syndrome of the omniscient forester confuses both research and management. The rapid incorporation of research experience into management is dependent upon a political and societal awareness that does not flow easily from a belief that "what's good for the land is good for the people".Similarly, acknowledging existing uncertainty at the initiation of a management decision helps eliminate the pathological avoidance of paying for mistakes, which often leads to foreclosure of options.
