Abstract
A new apparatus for the investigation of the dynamic friction of fabric is described. The apparatus is designed so that frictional forces may be recorded as a function of the orientation of the fabric relative to a specified direction. Most of the experimental data have been obtained for the friction of a fabric on itself and it is found that the mean frictional force, F p (averaged over all orientation), is related to the pressure, P, by a relationship of the form log F p = C1 + n log P which is consistent with the adhesion theory of friction. The values of n and C 1 depend mainly upon the structure of the yarns comprising the fabric, the chemical natrue of the fibres and the finish applied. Keywords
