Abstract
An open-circuit, valveless, continuous airflow respirographic technique has been developed for measuring the tidal volume, minute volume, respiratory rate, and respiratory airflow pattern simultaneously and continuously. Several electronic devices have been designed to provide the resolving power which is necessary for this measuring system. Results show that the instrument is capable of recording the pulse contour up to a frequency of 40 cycles per second and the system applies no measurable loading to the airstream. Consequently, the various respiratory parameters can be measured accurately. The tidal volumes of unanaesthetized young adult rats (100–300 g) tested under our experimental conditions were found to vary as the 0.67 power of the body weight. Keywords
