Abstract
This article describes a study of the relationship between social support networks and the health of elderly persons. Objective measures of the social support networks were designed by identifying and quantifying their specific dimensions, such as size and the frequency of contact among members. After combining data on the networks with demographic data, the author found a high correlation between these uniquely measured social variables and health status. The utilization of health care services was similarly studied.
