Abstract
North of the limestone chain, in the metamorphic zone of the Peloritani mountains of Sicily, Jurassic limestones are thrust over a conglomerate of Eocene or Oligocene age. The thrust occurred prior to deposition of the Oligocene-Miocene molasse of the region. Molasse and Jurassic limestones are structurally imbricated and in places phyllites are thrust over the limestones and conglomerate. The plastic behavior of the phyllites, and the intensity of erosion since deformation, have resulted in more recent movements on a large scale that further complicate determination of the structure.
