Abstract
Growth of Bacillus mesentericus, Bacterium coli commune, Streptococcus lactici acidi and Staphylococcus pyogenes aureus was greatly retarded in favorable media under O at 10 atm. pressure at or below opt. temp. By increasing the temp. by a few degrees, and in 1 case (Staph. pyogenes aureus) by as much as 13[degree] above opt., the effect of O under pressure was lethal, completely destroying the vegetative cells in 5 hrs. or less. Spores of the B. mesentericus strain used were not killed under these conditions.
