Abstract
Extract In their review on bovine mycotic abortion, Ainsworth and Austwick ( 1959 Ainsworth, G.C. and Austwick, P.K.C. 1959. Fungal Diseases of Animals, Review Series No. 6 Farnham Royal, , England: Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux. [Google Scholar] ) devoted most of their attention to a study of the causative agent and the epidemiology and reported that abortion was the only clinical sign. For a description of the gross and microscopic pathology of the foetal membranes and foetus, they referred to a paper by Bendixen and Plum ( 1929 Bendixen, H.C. and Plum, N. 1929. Acta. path. microbiol. Scand., 6: 252–252. [Cited by Ainsworth and Austwick, 1959.] [Google Scholar] ) which was not available to the writers of this paper. No other readily available description has been published since. In their description, the expelled foetal membranes had the maternal caruncle still attached to the foetal cotyledon, thus giving the appearance of great thickening of the foetal cotyledon. The cotyledons were yellow or brown and there was leathery thickening of the “intercaruncular” areas. Haemorrhage, necrosis, neutrophil infiltration and fungal hyphae tissue were observed in sections. Lesions of the skin of the foetus were reported to be infrequent (Austwick and Venn, 1957 Austwick, P.K.C and Venn, J.A.J . 1957. Vet. Rec., 69: 488–488. [Google Scholar] ) but no description was given. Keywords
