Abstract
Analyses of the jaws of nereid polychaetes have shown zinc to be a major inorganic component amounting to between 0·5 and 2·4% of the dry weight and accounting for up to 40% of the total body burden of zinc. In Nereis diversicolor, zinc concentrations in the jaws are not related to those of the habitat sediments. A high zinc content appears to be a structural characteristic of the nereid jaw. Keywords
