Characteristics of the Treatment Environment: A Factor Analytic Study

Abstract
Intercorrelations among the 72 items of the CTE—Characteristics of the Treatment Environment—were factored for three samples of attendants at institutions for the mentally retarded. The results differed from those of previous factor analytic studies of the CTE, which also conflicted with one another. A two-factor oblique solution was finally accepted, and the items were grouped into scales corresponding to the two factors, which were identified as Autonomy and Activity.
