Abstract
Summary. The mode of action of the Herren activator is explained and the function of the lateral pterygoid muscle is analysed. In two monozygotic twins it was demonstrated, by means of electromyographic recordings, that the activator acts as a splint. The protruded position of the mandible when wearing the activator did not depend on activity of the lateral pterygoid muscle. Mandibular growth was marked during activator treatment which is in accordance with the views of several authors who maintain that the activator produces a significant increase in mandibular growth rate. It was demonstrated that the mandibular growth rate depends on the width of the construction bite.
