Abstract
We have measured exclusive , , and meson electroproduction at the Cornell Wilson Synchrotron. The final data sample included 4637 four-constraint events, with incident energy GeV and electroproduction variables and in the region and GeV. We find that the width of the forward diffraction peak increases rapidly as the lifetime of the intermediate hadron states decreases below fm and that the peak is wider for longitudinal than it is for transverse . The longitudinal-transverse cross-section ratio , obtained assuming -channel helicity conservation, becomes constant at high . At fixed the diffractive vector-meson-dominance (VMD) model reproduces the dependence of our cross section, , but is is not able to account for the rapid decrease in the cross section with increasing we observe. We find that depends on but is independent of for and GeV. However, is substantially larger than the diffractive VMD cross section. Our results for are consistent with the dependence of the diffractive VMD model for
