A bilateral cortico-striate projection

Abstract
A bilateral cortical projection from the sensori-motor cortex to the caudate and putamen has been demonstrated in a large series of animal brains. Nauta stained sections of almost 100 brains of rats, rabbits and cats were examined following cortically placed lesions and evidence of the bilateral projection was found in 20 animals. Lesions of all other cortical areas besides the sensori-motor cortex resulted in degeneration of the ipsilateral striatum only. Contralateral projection fibers cross the midline in the corpus callosum and enter the caudate nucleus via the subcallosal fasciculus and the putamen via the external capsule. In the rabbit these fibers terminate in the caudal part of the head and adjoining part of the body of the caudate nucleus and the corresponding part of the putamen.
