Variational principles for invariant tori and cantori

Abstract

A variational principle for invariant tori with desirable properties is described, and used for the standard mapping. A static analogue of dynamical systems is introduced in order to provide in‐sight. This leads to cantori, which are invariant Cantor sets in the irregular or stochastic region of phase space.
