Abstract
Thermal analysis and first derivative analysis have been conducted on 319.2, 355.2, 356.2, 357.1, 380.2 and 413.2 alloys in both the unmodified and strontium modified conditions. Three cooling rates through the solidification range were used—0.1, 0.8 and 3.5°C s−1. Metallography, EDS and EPMA were used to identify the phases found in these alloys. The effects of strontium modification and cooling rate on the cooling rate characteristics of reactions other than primary aluminium formation and the Al-Si eutectic are described. Strontium is shown to influence certain of the post-eutectic reactions in these alloys. The effects of varing Fe, Mg and Cu, within the alloy specification are illustrated. Keywords
