DISTURBANCE OF NUMBER-FORM IN A CASE OF BRAIN INJURY

Abstract
A 24-yr.-old man was wounded by a metallic foreign body which entered the left parieto-occipital region to stop 1/2 inch above the right petrous temporal bone. After initial disorientation with slow recovery there remained after 5 yrs. a right homonymous visual field defect which was more evident in the lower quadrants, confused memory with 9+ days'' post-traumatic amnesia, minor disturbances in speech, writing and spelling, all in addition to defects in visual memory which were the chief disability. There was impairment of topographic sense, difficulty in copying and drawing from memory, and impairment of number-form with discalculia. Visualization of number-form had become indistinct and could be held in mind, but very poorly for purposes of calculation. There was no loss of understanding of arithmetical principles. Dysgraphia, right-left disorientation and finger agnosia, although present at first, persisted but little.
