Thyroid Function in Mongoloid Children

Abstract
THE PROTEIN-BOUND iodine (PBI) and radioactive iodine uptake has been reported to be normal in patients with mongolism.1,2 In 1961 Jackim3 reported that the in vitro erythrocyte triiodothyronine was elevated in mongoloids. Subsequent work4 has shown this to be normal. Our study is designed to demonstrate whether or not there is any abnormality in thyroxine-binding capacity in chromosomally confirmed mongoloid children. Methods Twenty-eight children with mongolism from a state school for mentally retarded children and 31 nonmongoloid retarded children from the same school were studied. In each child a chromosomal study was performed using a modification of the technique of Moorhead.5 Each patient was then studied by measurement of the thyroxine-binding capacity by a modification of the technique of Nicoloff.6 The method of determining thyroxine-binding capacity was modified by determining the resin uptake of individual serum samples at different levels of the added exogneous stable
