Abstract
Deficiencies in the care of mothers have been identified by the report Why Mothers Die and improved multidisciplinary training has been identified as a priority. In response to this statement an initiative has been set up at Gloucestershire Royal NHS Trust to teach midwives and trainee doctors how to manage maternal emergencies. The 1-day course has been called ‘Maternal Emergencies and Resuscitation Course’. The course teaches the theory and practice of the assessment and immediate management of life threatening situations. It aims to enable practitioners to maintain their skills and to be confident of their practice in situations that they are likely to meet infrequently. Clinical governance demands that we take responsibility for the quality of the service we provide. By organising and arranging a good training course we can hope to improve the clinical effectiveness, confidence and team building skills of the staff who work within the unit. Keywords
