Interrelationship of Damage and Strain in Particulate Composites

Abstract
An investigation was conducted to establish a relationship between strain and damage in particulate composites. It was shown that damage calculated based on stiffness-loss due to dilation at particle-matrix interface can be related to strain in the composite. The concept of relating damage to strain has its strength in structural design. It implies that one can infer damage quantitatively by knowing the local strain in the laminate. Since strain can be easily measured in the structure, damage due to microcracking can be assessed by the designer in a fairly simple way.Keywords
