Abstract
To the Editor: The report "Epidemic Listeriosis Associated with Mexican-Style Cheese" (Sept. 29 issue)* contains much new and useful information concerning the sources, spread, clinical manifestations, and prevention of human listeriosis. The conclusion, however, that the "most likely" source was contaminated raw milk was based on circumstantial evidence and was not proved, in spite of intensive efforts to do so.Although it may be correct, this conclusion would be more convincing if other logical sources had been considered and excluded. One other logical source is generalized plant contamination. Apparently, the only environmental studies of the factory were cultures of vat . . .
