Infantile subacute necrotizing encephalopathy

Abstract
A case of infantile subacute necrotizing encephalopathy is described. This 3-month-old female infant clinically presented with convulsions and coma. Microscopic examination revealed extensive lesions resembling those of Wernicke''s encephalopathy. Their distribution differed, however, in that they showed a predilection for the brain stem, while the mammillary bodies were spared. The etiology of this disease remains obscure.
