Sociology of Education or Sociology of Ethnocentrism? The Portrayal of Education in U.S. Introductory Sociology Textbooks

Abstract
A major inadequacy exists in the knowledge about educational issues that is being conveyed to U.S. college students: scant attention is paid to Third World education in introductory sociology textbooks. To examine this issue, we first provide a content analysis of the chapters on education in 22 current texts. This analysis reveals that such texts tend to provide an ethnocentric portrayal of education by placing the United States and other northern industrialized nations at the center of the educational universe while virtually ignoring educational issues in relation to the three-quarters of the world's population, those who live in Third World nations. We then suggest specific issues regarding Third World education and social change that such chapters could include to increase our students' global awareness.
