HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS TO ETHYLENEDIAMINE IN AMINOPHYLLINE

Abstract
Adverse reactions to aminophylline are usually manifested by the toxic effects of theophylline on the gastrointestinal, cardiac and CNS. Reactions to its ethylenediamine component are less commonly encountered. A man who had severe exfoliative erythroderma after i.v. administration of aminophylline for respiratory disease is presented. Apparently, the reaction was a cell-mediated hypersensitivity to ethylenediamine.
